It is not built for a world where roles shift every few years, where AI is reshaping entire job categories, and where more professionals than ever are combining several income streams, several roles and several forms of contribution, not because they could not decide, but because it fits who they are.

A portfolio career is not a collection of random gigs. It is a deliberate architecture, a way of combining roles, projects, income streams and forms of contribution so that they reflect your strengths, your values and the season of life you are in.
Professionals who build the most fulfilled careers are usually the ones who stopped trying to fit themselves into one box and started designing a structure that fits them instead.
One of the themes Laura and I return to in the episode is failure culture: how you interpret setbacks shapes whether you keep experimenting or shut down. This is the question at the heart of my book, The Dinosaur Principle (Springer), on intercultural failure culture.
In a portfolio career, where you are often testing new roles, offers or formats, your relationship with failure is not a soft skill on the side. Iterating and pivoting is close to the whole game in your early times.
You do not need to resign tomorrow or have the full portfolio mapped out before you begin. The first step is usually smaller: naming the range you already have, and asking where one deliberate addition, a project, a client, a teaching engagement, could start to reflect it.
